A cross-linguistic look at VP-ellipsis and verbal speech errors

چکیده

This paper argues that consideration of spontaneous speech errors provides insight into cross-linguistic analyses of syntactic phenomena. In particular, I claim that differences in the distribution of non-parallel VP-Ellipsis constructions in English and German, as well as variation in the spontaneously-occurring verbal speech errors, is explained by a parametric analysis of variation in the inflectional systems of the two languages. 1. A Hybrid Theory of Inflection Lasnik (1995) argues for a parametric analysis of verbal inflection according to which a language may exhibit (i) a unitary system, where main and auxiliary verbs come either pre-inflected in the lexicon, or are derivationally constructed out of syntactically separate stem and affix, or (ii) a hybrid system, where main and auxiliary verbs are derived differently.

A Generalized Reconstruction Algorithm For Ellipsis Resolution

We present an algorithm which assigns interpretations to several major types of ellipsis structures through a generalized procedure of syntactic reconstruction. Ellipsis structures are taken to be sequences of lexically realized arguments and/or adjuncts of an empty verbal head. Reconstruction is characterized as the specification of a (partial) correspondence relation between the unrealized he...

Verb Phrase Ellipsis and Pseudogapping are (really) not the same

Verb Phrase (VP) Ellipsis and Pseudogapping have at times been treated as variants of the same process (Kuno 1981, Jayaseelan 1990, 2001, Lasnik 1995, 1999, Johnson 2001). In both cases something verbal is elided. In VP Ellipsis the verb and all of its arguments are elided, while in Pseudogapping, only the verb (and a subset of its arguments) is elided stranding one of its arguments; in both ca...

The current study investigates the“e...

A Contrastive Study of Persian and English Written Discourse: Ellipsis in Realistic Novels

This study aspires to examine the concept of ellipsis by comparing and contrasting English and Persian written texts. For this purpose, three Persian novels and three English ones were selected. These novels were analyzed carefully; they were compared and contrasted for types and amount of ellipsis used, through a Chi-square analysis.  The results of the data analysis revealed that various t...
